WILLIAM L. MARCY. ALS: "W.L. Marcy", 3p, 8x10. Albany, N.Y., 1840 March 30. Addressed on verso of third page to: "Charles Stebbing Esq/Cazanova/Madison Co./N.Y.", Albany postmark. On financial and legal matters. In part: "Will you make the necessary application-get the injunction against the creditors &c? I think the injunction &c would be a proper step- The Ch[ancellor] thought a judg[men]t against the Bank after a receiver was appointed would be of no effect...." Marcy served as New York State Comptroller (1823-1829), U.S. Senator (1831-1832), Governor (1833-1839), Polk's Secretary of War (1845-1849) and Pierce's Secretary of State (1853-1857). Folds. ½-inch tear at blank right margin from opening red wax seal (still present). Lightly creased. Light ink show through.
