American journalist, novelist and historian, is best known for his 1960 work,
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany,
which won the National Book Award in the non-fiction category in 1961. Shirer, a
veteran foreign correspondent who had been stationed in Berlin until 1940, is
also the model for the correspondent Walker in the film Gandhi. He was
the first of "Murrow's Boys", the elite team of CBS reporters, recruited by
Edward R. Murrow, who set the standard broadcast journalism. Corners slightly
