Price: $160.00
WILLIAM LAWRENCE. Autograph Letter signed: "Wm Lawrence", 1
p, 4¼x5½. On personal stationery with embossed street address in Boston. No
place, no date ("Wed Evg"). To "my dear Scribner". In full:
"I have put in an envelope addressed to you several autographs & have set
the envelope on the mantel of the reception room at the left of my front door.
You can therefore direct the maid to it. The autographs are one type written
letter from Roosevelt & Taft each, one full M.S.S. letter from Archbishop
Davidson. Sorry that then are not all M.S.S. letters. Yours Sincerely."
Lawrence (1850-1941), an Episcopal bishop in Massachusetts, was a
"liberal" Protestant who generated great controversy by questioning the
virgin birth of Jesus. Lawrence also saw a close link between virtue and
business success, acting as an important fundraiser for the Harvard Business
School and declaring in 1900: "In the long run it is only to the man of morality
that wealth comes. Godliness is in league with riches." Slightly creased and
soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
