Autograph letter signed: "Leonard Courtney", 1 page, 4x5¾. May 1, 1891. In full: "Adjust and make you or Jon Denhaim wish to this you may be. Though Days yet close; though grand yet more dull; Strong without sage; without overflowing fire". William Leonard Courtney (1850-1928) was an author, philosopher, and journalist, first beginning his education at Somerset College. After finishing his education, he was appointed Headmaster of Somersetshire College and remained there for some years before transferring to Oxford in 1876 to lecture. During his time at Oxford he focused on philosophy, lecturing, and writing for many years. He also worked as a journalist during his stay at Oxford, writing for The World, The Fortnightly Review, Edinburgh Review, and The Daily Telegraph. He was chief editor of The Fortnightly Review from 1894 until his death. His own publications include Life of John Stuart Mill (1889), The Feminine Note in Fiction (1904), and In Search of Egeria (1911). Left edge worn. Corners lightly worn and creased. Toned.
