WILLIAM LOEB, JR.
Signed on White House stationery as Secretary to President Theodore
Roosevelt
Typed Letter signed: "Wm. Loeb, Jr.", 1 page, 5x8. May 13,
1904. On White House stationery to Mr. H. H. McClure, New York, N.Y. In full:
"I have your letter of the 11th instant and shall take pleasure in
calling the books you mention. Thanking you for your courtesy I am very truly
yours". William Loeb, Jr. (1866-1937) was active in New York
Republican politics and an aide to several office holders before becoming an
official stenographer to Governor Theodore Roosevelt in 1899. Quickly
recognizing Loeb's ability to get things done, Roosevelt made him his personal
secretary. When Roosevelt became President, Loeb served as his Assistant
Personal Secretary (1901-1903) and his top Secretary thereafter. Far from a
mere clerk, Loeb was an intimate policy advisor of the President, functioning
unofficially as what would later become Press Secretary. Very accessible to
the press, Loeb carefully restricted access to the President. He served as
Collector of Customs for the Port of New York (1909-1913) before retiring to
private life. He was the father of conservative New Hampshire newspaper editor
William Loeb III. Normal mailing folds. Worn along left edge. Faint stains.
Otherwise, fine condition.
