WILLIAM L. WILSON. Signature: "Wm L. Wilson./Charlestown, W. Va.", 7¼x3, irregularly cut. William Lyne Wilson (1843-1900), a former Private in the Confederate Army, taught Latin at Columbian College (1865-1871) and practiced law (1871-1882) before becoming President of the University of West Virginia. He then entered politics, serving as a Democrat U .S. Representative from West Virginia (1883-1895). As Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means (1893-1895), Wilson was active in the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and he authored the Wilson Gorman tariff of 1894. Wilson then served as Grant's Postmaster General from 1895-1897, inaugurating the rural free delivery system during his tenure. In his last years, he was President of Washington and Lee University (1897-1900). Slightly creased. Lightly shaded at right margin. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Fine condition.
