Signature of the American author and critic in the year he published his
Autobiography with Letters.
Signature: "Wm Lyon Phelps", 3x2 card. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on
verso date this autograph as being signed on "5-10-39". American author, critic
and scholar William Lyon Phelps (1865-1943) taught English at Yale for 41
years (1892-1933; Lampson Professor, 1901-1933). A graduate of Harvard, he
had taught there for one year before joining the faculty at Yale. Phelps wrote a
number of books, including Essays on Modern Novelists (1910),
Essays on Modern Dramatists (1921-1922), Autobiography with
Letters (1939) and Marriage (1940). He also served as the Director
of the Hall of Fame for Great Americans from 1941-1943. Slightly soiled.
