Signed the year after Phelps had published What I Like in Poetry (1934). American author, critic and scholar William Lyon Phelps (1865-1943) taught English at Yale for 41 years (1892-1933; Lampson Professor, 1901-1933). A graduate of Harvard, he had taught there for one year before joining the faculty at Yale. Phelps wrote a number of books, including Essays on Modern Novelists (1910), Essays on Modern Dramatists (1921-1922), Autobiography with Letters (1939) and Marriage (1940). He also served as the Director of the Hall of Fame for Great Americans from 1941-1943. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "Ly" of Lyon. Slightly soiled at lower right margin. Fine condition.
