University, New Haven, Connecticut, 1935 January 6. On imprinted sheet to
"Dear Mrs. Rankin". In full: "Thank you very much for your
charming letter, which has given me a great deal of pleasure. I am delighted
to know that you read and enjoy my daily articles and appreciate your
writing to me the way you have. With many thanks and all good wishes, believe me
Faithfully yours". Signed the year after Phelps had published What I
Like in Poetry (1934). American author, critic and scholar William Lyon
Phelps (1865-1943) taught English at Yale for 41 years (1892-1933;
Lampson Professor, 1901-1933). A graduate of Harvard, he had taught there for
one year before joining the faculty at Yale. Phelps wrote a number of
books, including Essays on Modern Novelists (1910), Essays on
Modern Dramatists (1921-1922), Autobiography with Letters (1939) and
Marriage (1940). He also served as the Director of the Hall of Fame
for Great Americans from 1941-1943. Lightly creased with folds, vertical
fold at the "Ly" of Lyon. Slightly soiled at lower right margin. Fine
condition.
