Autograph Letter Signed: "W. M. Meredith", 2 pages, 8x9¾. Philadelphia, 1837 October 11. To David Stewart, in full: "I have to acknowledge receipt of your two letters, one including your Affidavit for which I am much obliged to you, and the other Mr. Hunter's letter which I have read and now return to you. I think you will be able to satisfy Mr. Hunter on the subject of the Attachment laid by his House, and I shall be much surprised if the Counsel should persist in his favorable opinion of their claim after reading the Affidavit. In haste. Always faithfully yours". William Morris Meredith (1799-1873 was United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. Before serving in the Cabinet, he was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Philadelphia City Council. Later he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1861-1867). He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870. Soiled and lightly stained. Normal mailing fold creases. Paper separation at the fold has been silked back together. Hole where seal was pulled out has been replaced. Otherwise, fine condition.
