Manuscript letter signed: "W M Meredith", in black ink, 7¾x9¾. January 28, 1850. Treasury Department. In part: "Sir: I return, herewith, the three certificates of damage exceeding fifty percent. I enclosed in your letter of the 25th inst. in importation of merchandise by Mefr. Mortimer + Garity, Wright, Sturger + Shaw, and Terel + Blair, said damage having occurred during the voyage of importation, and having been duly estimated by the appraisers". William M. Meredith (1799-1873) was US Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870. Left edge frayed and torn. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slightly toned on outer edges. Ink notes (unknown hand). Pin holes in left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
