Manuscript letter signed: "W M Meredith", in black ink, 7¾x10. February 11, 1850. Treasury Department. In part: "Sir: I herewith transmit copy of a letter dated the 17th [illegible] from James Winslow Sr Esq of your party asking information on [illegible] of importations of merchandise from Canada. The act of [illegible] of the 8th of August 1846 and the circular instructions dated if the 9th September 1846 regulated importations of the kind reference to by Mr. Winslow, and that gentleman has accordingly been referenced to you for information". William M. Meredith (1799-1873) was US Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. Before serving in the Cabinet, he was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Philadelphia City Council. Later he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1861-1867). He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870. Left edge frayed and torn. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slightly toned on outer edges. Ink notes (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
