WILLIAM M. MEREDITH
Manuscript letter from the Secretary of the Treasury regarding proprietors of a national museum of "a general assortment of natural curiosities"
, saying that there is currently no law exempting them from payment for the exhibition of items from the museum
Manuscript letter signed: "W. M. Meredith/Secretary of the Treasury", 7¾x10. April 4, 1850. Treasury Department. In part: "Sirs, [illegible] representing themselves as proprietors of a "national museum" in New York, have authorized to this department the question, [illegible] "a general assortment of natural curiosities" for such mediums sooner be entitled, or [illegible], to free entry. If the articles in question are intended for [illegible] exhibition for the benefit of the proprietors of the museum, as would seem to be the case, there is no provision of existing law exempting them or [illegible] from the payment of duty". William M. Meredith (1799-1873) was US Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. Before serving in the Cabinet, he was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Philadelphia City Council. Later he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1861-1867). He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Left edge frayed and torn. Small pin holes on left margin. Ink note (unknown hand) on top margin. Slightly toned on outer margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
