Manuscript letter signed: "W M Meredith", in black ink, 7¾x10. April 8, 1850. Treasury Department. In part: "Sir: Thomas Armstrong, [illegible] on board of the Rev. Bark Polk, having requested that his compensation for the months of June and July next, may be paid to his wife Elizabeth Armstrong at the rate of $18 70/100 pr month. I have to inform you that the Department has acceded to his wishes, and you are authorized to settle the compensation as it becomes due". William M. Meredith (1799-1873) was US Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. Before serving in the Cabinet, he was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Philadelphia City Council. Later he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1861-1867). He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870. Left edge frayed and torn. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slightly toned on outer edges. Ink notes (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
