WILLIAM M. MEREDITH
Meredith's signature on a manuscript letter dated 1850 regarding inquiries into navigation law, saying that any vessel carrying merchandise in bulk must be properly inspected and appraised before paying duties
Manuscript letter signed: "W M Meredith", in black ink, 8x10. April 26, 1850. Treasury Department. In part: "Sir: I have received a letter, under date of the 20th inst. from R W Cameron Esq. now at New York, propounding several inquiries in relation to our navigation laws. In reference to the inquiries, I have to state, that a vessel cannot make entry and pay duties on her cargo without breaking bulk, and without the merchandise having been subjected to such inspection, examination and appraisement, as would make it on importation without the meaning of law". William M. Meredith (1799-1873) was US Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. Before serving in the Cabinet, he was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Philadelphia City Council. Later he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1861-1867). He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870. Left edge frayed and torn. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slightly toned on outer edges.
