WILLIAM M. WHEELER
The former Tuskegee airman signs an FDC honoring Benjamin
Banneker.
First Day Cover signed: "William M. Wheeler", 6½x3¾. FDC
honoring African-American astronomer Benjamin Banneker, postmarked February
15, 1980, 15-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. William M. Wheeler
(1923-2011) left Howard University to become a Tuskegee airman, flying
combat missions in Europe with the all-black 302nd Fighter Squadron in 1944.
Racial discrimination prevented Wheeler from becoming a commercial pilot after
the war, so he became a bank administrator. Wheeler was active in promoting
awareness of the Tuskegee airmen, speaking at schools, aviation museums and
air shows until his death. He was present in 2007 when President Bush bestowed
the Congressional Gold Medal on the men of Tuskegee. Fine condition.
