The brilliant British satirist and novelist makes plans to return to
London.
ANS: "W M Thackeray", 1p, 4x2½.
Paris, no year Wednesday. In full: "Let the house
be ready, and the carriage come for us to the Dover London Bdg. Station at 10/30
on Friday morning." Since this letter refers to "us", it was
likely written after 1836, when the author married Isabella Gethen Creagh
Shawe. Thackeray, who wrote Vanity Fair (serialized 1847-1848,
published in book form in 1848), first went to Paris in the early 1830s as a
correspondent for the "National Standard", a newspaper he purchased with an
inheritance. Thackeray began publishing journalistic pieces in London ("The
Times", "Fraser's Magazine", "The New Monthly Magazine" and "Punch") but had
to shuttle back and forth to Paris in a futile search for a cure for his wife,
who went insane in 1840. Among Thackeray's later works were The Book of
Snobs (1848) and The Virginians (1857), which
contained a critical portrayal of George Washington. Creased with folds,
touching signature. Mounting remnants on verso show through at margins touching
some words and signature. Diagonally cut corners. Nicked at lower edge, ¼-inch
separation at lower right blank margin.
