WILLIAM MARVIN WATSON
The longtime advisor to Lyndon B. Johnson signed this card in black ink
Signature: “W. Marvin Watson” in black ink on a 3½x2 card. Typed: “Postmaster General of
the United States”. W. Marvin Watson (b. 1924 in Oakhurst, Texas) was a prominent
political advisor to President Lyndon B. Johnson for decades, first meeting him while
working on his election campaign for the United States Senate in 1948. Watson's political
career followed the ascent of Lyndon B. Johnson, the latter of whom became a national
political figure who was eventually elected to the Vice Presidency. Watson was named head of
the Democratic Party in Texas in the late 1950s, later running the Texas for John F. Kennedy
1960 presidential campaign. Once LBJ became President after Kennedy's assassination, his
advisor for so many years was given the all-important position as White House
Appointments Secretary; today's equivalent position is White House Chief of Staff. From
1968-1969, Watson served as the Postmaster General. Interestingly, when LBJ was a United
States Senator and Vice President, Watson refused an official staff position after being offered
one many times. As a young man, the signer served in the United States Marine Corps
during WWII, taking part in the Pacific Theater area of operation. Fine condition.
