WILLIAM MASON. Autograph Musical Quotation inscribed and signed: "To Miss Katherine Gold./William Mason/New York/Nov. 26th 1900." Above his signature, Mason has drawn three bars of music, titling them: "From Op. 47." American composer, concert pianist and author William Mason (1829-1908) was the son of composer Lowell Mason, and the older brother of Henry Mason, who co-founded the piano manufacturing firm of Mason and Hamlin. William, the first American piano student of Franz Liszt, introduced Americans to the music of Robert Schumann and other European composers during the Civil War era, and he was known in his own right for his Chopinesque compositions for the piano. He also wrote a number of books on piano method and technique. Slightly creased with fold, mid-horizontal fold nicks the upper portion of the "W" in William. Slightly soiled. Mounting remnants on verso of blank integral leaf (no show through), upper left corner of leaf torn away. Overall, fine condition.
