WILLARD MULLIN
The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums”
Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many
thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn
Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin.
Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his
creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which
was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several
publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun.
This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived
in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie
was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of
the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x
30½.
