WILLIAM O WOOLDRIDGE
Combat hero of World War II and the first Sergeant Major of the Army
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To:/Thomas Alford/all best
wishes/William Wooldridge/SGM of the Army/Jan 67" as Sergeant Major of
the Army. B/w, 8x10. Accompanied by a transmittal letter on official
letterhead from his administrative assistant, dated 1967 January 5. William
Woodridge served as a combat infantryman throughout the European Theater of
World War II, from North Africa to Sicily to D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge
and on into Germany. His many decorations included two Silver Stars, not to
mention a Purple Heart. He served two tours in Vietnam, the second as
Sergeant Major of the Military Assistance Command (MACV). As the first
Sergeant Major of the Army (1966-1968), he pursued many initiatives to
improve conditions for, and further professionalize, the noncommissioned
officers corps. Wooldridge's reputation was tarnished somewhat when he
acknowledged having receiving free shares of stock in a company supplying NCO
Clubs in Vietnam. After retiring from active duty, Sergeant Major Wooldridge
continued to teach at the Sergeant Major Academy (Fort Bliss Texas) a school he
had advocated as the Army's Sergeant Major. Fine condition.
