WILLIAM ORDWAY PARTRIDGE
The sculptor invites a guest to his studio for a dinner honoring
author George Cary Eggleston.
Autograph Letter signed: "Wm Ordway Partridge", 2 pages (front
and verso), 5x6½. 289 Fourth Avenue, New York City, 1903 December 7. On
personal letterhead to "My dear Mr. Upton", in full: "The
friends and admirers of George Cary Eggleston are to tender him an informal
dinner in this studio on Monday December 14th at seven o'clock p.m., as a token
of their affection and admiration for the man and his work in the rebuilding of
American literature and criticism. I earnestly hope you may be present and add
to the pleasure and good fellowship of the evening. Faithfully yours.

Partridge (1861-1930), born in Paris to American parents, was famed for
his portrait busts, including busts of Shakespeare and of Alexander Hamilton
shown at Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1893. Partridge's monumental
statuary includes Pocahontas at Jamestown, Virginia; Thomas Jefferson by the
Columbia University School of Journalism, and a Pietà in New York's St Patrick's
Cathedral. He many publications include works on esthetics, art history,
sculpture technique, and also poetry. Multiple folds. Slightly toned. Light
surface creases. Adhesive residue on back page. Otherwise, fine
condition.
