WILLIAM "BILL" HOBBY, JR.
The longest serving Texas Lieutenant Governor (1973-1991) sends a
letter to a school principal. Dated in 1974.
Typed letter signed: "Bill Hobby", 1p, 7¼x10½. From the
office of the Lieutenant Governor, Austin, Texas, February 19, 1974. In
full: "Dear Mr. Pruett:/thank you very much for your letter requesting my
autograph to include in the classroom bulletin board which you are preparing for
your special education students. Your bringing this request to my attention is
appreciated. Enclosed is a signed photograph which I would be honored for you to
include in your bulletin board. In addition, I am returning the envelope you
enclosed with the Lyndon B. Johnson commemorative stamp which I have also
signed. I commend you for the work you are doing with these special students and
I trust that they take some pleasure from the proposed bulletin board.
Sincerely,." William Pettus "Bill" Hobby, Jr. (b.1932) is an American
politician who served as Texas's Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1991, an 18
year record. A Democrat, he is the son of William P. Hobby Sr. who
also served as Lieutenant Governor of Texas (1917-1921). His mother, Oveta
Culp Hobby was the first person to ever be appointed the United States Secretary
of Health, Education and Welfare by President Eisenhower. Both of his
grandfathers also served in the Texas legislature. Before entering politics,
Hobby worked at the family newspaper (now-defunct) Houston Post as an
editor and later president, a position he held for 20 years.Hobby has
also served as Chancellor of the University of Houston System (1995-1997).
