WILLIAM P. FRYE. TLS: "Wm P Frye" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 5½x8½. United States Senate, Washington, 1888 July 9. To James S. Lehmaier (sic, Lehmair), N.Y. Frye cannot "address the 'Republican League of the State of New York', July 11" because as "chairman of the conference committee on the River and Harbor bill, it will be entirely impossible for me to leave until the work of that committee is completed." WILLIAM P. FRYE was U.S. Senator from Maine from 1881-1911. He served as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1896-1911. From November 21, 1899 (death of V.P. Hobart) to March 3, 1901, and from September 14, 1901 (death of President McKinley) to March 3, 1905, as President Pro Tempore, Frye was next in line to the Presidency. Three loose-leaf holes at blank left margin. Creased. Folds. Glue remnants on verso show through at left and right blank edges. Lightly soiled. ¼-inch tear at mid left file hole (all intact).
