Signed on cover. PROXMIRE (1915-2005), a Democrat, represented Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate (1957-1989). Proxmire chaired the Senate's Banking Committee for 8 years. Beginning in 1975, he announced annual "Golden Fleece" awards for the biggest waste of taxpayers' money. Examples included a $27,000 study of why inmates want to escape from prison and a $6,000, 17-page guide to consumers on how to buy Worcestershire Sauce. Proxmire has said that his favorite "Golden Fleece" was a grant to determine whether sunfish were more aggressive after consuming tequila or gin.
