WILLIAM PROXMIRE
The Representative of Wisconsin signs a letter to Barbara Norton, then head of the Public Relations department at the Sheraton-Park Hotel, thanking her for a Christmas greeting.
Typed letter signed: "Bill", in blue ink, 1 page, 6¼x8. United States Senate. Washington, D.C. December 1965. In full: "Dear Barbara: Ellen and I are grateful for your Christmas greeting. And now let us believe in the New Year that is given to us, fresh, untouched, full of things that have never been. All the best. Sincerely". William Proxmire (1915-2005), a Democrat, represented Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate (1957-1989). Proxmire chaired the Senate's Banking Committee for 8 years. Beginning in 1975, he announced annual "Golden Fleece" awards for the biggest waste of taxpayers' money. Examples included a $27,000 study of why inmates want to escape from prison and a $6,000, 17-page guide to consumers on how to buy Worcestershire Sauce. Proxmire has said that his favorite "Golden Fleece" was a grant to determine whether sunfish were more aggressive after consuming tequila or gin. Tape on bottom and top margin. Normal mailing fold. Fine condition.
