Hand print signed: "William R. Anderson", 7½x10. Captain
William R. Anderson commanded the Nautilus (SSN-571), the first
nuclear powered submarine in the U.S. Navy, during its historic voyage under the
North Pole, submerged under the ice for 96 hours and 1,830 miles. As the
vessel reached the pole, Anderson announced: "For the world, Our Country, and
the Navy - the North Pole." After retiring from the Navy in 1962, Anderson
represented Tennessee for in the U.S. House of Representative four terms
(1965-1973) as a Democrat. The Nautilus, decommissioned in 1979, was
declared a National Historic Landmark in 1982. The public may visit the
historic sub at the Submarine Force Museum, Groton, Connecticut. Ink note
