William Richard Morris(1877-1963), born in Worcester, Britain, was a British automobile manufacturer who helped introduce Henry Ford's mass production techniques to the British automobile industry. Morris got his start as the apprentice of a bicycle repairman at 15 and, by 1902, had designed his first motorcycle. Morris formed the Morris Motor Company in 1912; the company's first car was the four-cylinder Oxford, with acetylene headlights and oil taillights, also called the Bullnose because of its round-topped radiator. The Oxford series was built, with only one break, from 1913 to 1971. The Morris Motor Company became the Nuffield Organisation in 1938, which merged with former competitor Austin Motor Company to become the British Motor Corporation in 1952 and later with Jaguar to become British Motor Holdings. Morris was also a philanthropist and founded the Nuffield Foundation, a charitable trust, in 1934 with an endowment of £10 million. Morris was created Baron Nuffield in 1934 and a viscount in 1938.
