The American editor and poet fills out an envelope in black ink
Autograph envelope signed: "W.R. Benet" in black ink as part of a return address. 5¼x4
envelope addressed to Mrs. Jonathan M. Wainwright of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Postmarked
December 7, 1940 in New York City, New York. William Rose Benét (1886-1950), the
brother of poet Stephen Vincent Benét (1898-1943) and husband of poet and novelist
Elinor Wylie (1885-1928), founded the "Saturday Review of Literature" (1924), editing it
until his death. He was also an accomplished poet, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry
(1942) for "The Dust Which is God." The work, an autobiographical novel in verse, is full
of allusions to the literary and social history of early 20th century America. Slightly worn and
soiled. Toned. Corners creased. Top edge cut open. Ink stamps throughout. Sticker affixed on
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
