WILLIAM ROSE BENÉT
His signed, handwritten note returns autographed books, but he declined to
sign a volume which contained no poem by him.
ANS: "Wm. Rose Benét", 1 page, 5½x2¾. New York, N.Y., no date.
To unknown recipient. In full: "One anthology I did not write in, as
it contained nothing by me. I have no portrait. The books in the package will be
in the lobby. Just ask the doorman. Sincerely". William Rose Benét
(1886-1950), the brother of poet Stephen Vincent Benét (1898-1943) and
husband of poet and novelist Elinor Wylie (1885-1928), founded the
"Saturday Review of Literature" (1924), editing it until his death. He was
also an accomplished poet, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (1942) for
"The Dust Which is God." The work, an autobiographical novel in verse, is
full of allusions to the literary and social history of early 20th century
America. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled. Light
show-through from mounting remnants on verso at upper margin, touching two words
of writing (all legible). Overall, fine condition.
