The poet inscribes and signs a printed copy of his "Prayer for England", a moving tribute to a nation then fighting alone against Hitler ("midnight's lord of lies.")
Poem inscribed and signed: "For Jessie Wainwright/from William Rose Benet/January 2, 1941" on cover, 4 pages, 5x8. Reprint of "Prayer for England" ©1940, William Rose Benet. First published in the "New York Evening Post" on September 27, 1940, during the Battle of Britain while England stood alone and against Hitler's Germany, the six stanza "Prayer for England" appealed for the country's deliverance "from midnight's lord of lies." William Rose Benet (1886-1950), brother of poet Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943) and husband of poet Elinor Wylie (1885-1928), founded the "Saturday Review of Literature" (1924), editing it until his death. He was also an accomplished poet, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (1942) for "The Dust Which is God". Cover unevenly faded, else fine condition.
