WILLIAM ROSE BENET
He signs a typed letter discussing his new book, and obtaining prints of Elinor Wylie's photo.
Typed Letter signed: "William Rose Benet". 2 pages, 4¾x7¾. No place, 1941 February 13. To Mrs. Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright. In full: "I should have answered your letter but was pushing the book through which now - thank God! - is at last in the hands of the publishers. I'm glad you liked the poems. Douglas Moore, head of the Columbia Music School (an old friend of Elinor's) has made a setting for the Prayer and it is soon to be published. I was very grieved to hear of your daughter-in-law being in the hospital, but deeply glad all is well now. I am going to Florida on Sunday, where my address will be c/o the Aviles Bookshop, Aviles Street, St. Augustine, Florida. I will take with me the negative of Elinor's picture and get my friend Mina Turner who runs the bookshop and is also an expert to make prints of it. I will send you one from there. This book of mine, which is called 'The Dust Which is God' (from Swinburne's 'Hertha') will be out the end of March or early April and I'll send you a copy. With the very best wishes in the world now and always!" WILLIAM ROSE BENET (1886-1950), brother of poet Stephen Vincent Benet and husband of poet Elinor Wylie, founded the "Saturday Review of Literature" (1924), editing it until his death. He was also an accomplished poet, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (1942) for "The Dust Which is God", the publishing of which delayed the writing of this letter.Accompanied by typed envelope addressed to Mrs. Wainwright in Scranton, Pennsylvania, postmarked New York, N.Y., February 14, 1941. Benet has made minor ink corrections to the letter. Fine condition. Two items.
