WILLIAM SCHWANN
Signature from the Schwann Record and Tape Guide founder on a
typed letter, thanking a fan for their interest but saying he has no signed
photographs available to send. Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "Wm. Schwann", in black ink, 6x7. July
20, 1973. Boston, Massachusetts. In part: "Dear Mr. Stanhope: Thank
you for your letter of July 16th and your interest in requesting an autographed
photo of me. I am sorry to say that I do not have any photos available".
William Schwann (1913-1998), a musicologist and publisher, is best
remembered for his Schwann catalog, later called the Schwann
Record and Tape Guide. Started in 1949, the publication was an effort
by Schwann to catalogue the release of classical LPs, as he could find no
other source that had recorded the release of the records. The catalogue
eventually branched out into other music genres, including jazz and pop,
though classical music remained the primary focus. He was praised by other
experts in the musical world, receiving honorary doctorates and awards
throughout his career. In the 1980's, Schwann sold the publication to
Stereophile, where it remains in quarterly print. Corners slightly worn and
creased. Slight surface creases. Slightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
