Queux's novel The Great White Queen: A Tale of Treasure and Treason to: "W.J.L."
Excerpt In Part: "Its enormous wings, each full five hundred feet from body to tip were [illegible]
on either side + supported by gigantic pillars of rock carved to represent warriors' grotesque +
hideous figures of men and animals. They formed great temples on either side of the body. The
latter, however, attracted our attention more than [illegible] the wonderful wings for as we stood
aghast + amazed we [illegible] that the vast body of the colossus did not represent that [illegible]
but the gigantic jaws were [illegible] of a crocodile." William Le Queux (1864-1927) was a
journalist, writer, and diplomat who published fiction and nonfiction works in prolific
fashion. His novels include The Great War in England in 1897 (1894)and The Invasion
of 1910 (1906), both fictional books that are part of a genre called invasion literature. His
anti-German sentiments before WWI and calls to build up the military in preparation for an
invasion are a theme throughout many of his works. Worn. Small hole in top left corner.
