WILLIAM T. "OLIVER OPTIC" ADAMS
Oliver Optic advised someone to "Aim High" with this card, signed with
his pen name "Oliver Optic" and his real name
Autograph quotation signed: "'Aim high."/William T Adams/"Oliver Optic.".
3x1¾. William T. "Oliver Optic" Adams (1822-1897) taught in Boston public
schools (1845-1865). Under the pseudonym Oliver Optic, he wrote 126
books, mostly series for boys. His books contained more adventure than
most of what was being written for young people then and so were
controversial. Some libraries banned them as too "sensational," but young
readers loved them. In 1871, no other author was borrowed so frequently from the
Boston Public Library. He engaged in a literary quarrel with Louisa May
Alcott, who chided readers of "optical delusions." Adams wrote scathing
rebuttals. Lightly toned. Discolored from album mountings in corners. Otherwise
in fine condition.
