WILLIAM TYLER PAGE
Copy of William Tyler Page's The American's Creed, printed by the Government Printing Office in 1926 and signed by Page in blue ink
Pamphlet signed: "Wm Tyler Page" . Color, 4 pages, 5¾x9, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Titled: "The/AMERICAN'S CREED/A Summary of American/Civic Faith/By WILLIAM TYLER PAGE". Printed in 1926 by the Government Printing Office. House Document No. 416 from the 1st Session of the 69th Congress. William Tyler Page (1868-1942) worked for 61 years in the United States Capitol, starting as a page in 1881 and rising to Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, a post he held from 1919 to 1931. He's probably best known for writing the American's Creed in 1917. The American's Creed was written for a nationwide contest and was, according to Page, "a summing up, in one hundred words, of the basic principles of American political faith." (He reportedly spent the prize money on Liberty Bonds) Page's family has deep roots in the United States. He is great-great-grandson of Carter Braxton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a descendant of President John Tyler. Lightly toned, soiled and foxed. Signature is lightly spotted, but legible. Random ink stains. Folded twice and unfolded. Discolored along folds and spine. Otherwise, fine condition.
