WILLIAM TYLER PAGE
Page signed this letter, typed on House of Representatives Office of the Clerk to the Minority letterhead in 1940. It was sent to a fan and accompanied a copy of his The American's Creed.
Typed letter signed "Wm Tyler Page". 1 page, 7¾x10¼, on Page's personalized letterhead from the House of Representatives Office of the Clerk to the Minority in Washington, D. C. April 22, 1940. Addressed to Mr. Edward S. Hoffmeister, Darby, Pennsylvania. In full: "Dear Mr. Hoffmeister: I am pleased to comply with your appreciated request by sending you an autographed copy of 'The American's Creed' and a miniature photograph [not included]. Sincerely,". Page was made Emeritus Minority Clerk, a position created for him, after serving as Clerk of the United States House of Representatives. Page (1868-1942, born in Frederick, Maryland) worked for 61 years in the United States Capitol, starting as a page in 1881 and rising to Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, a post he held from 1919 to 1931. He's probably best known for writing the American's Creed in 1917. The American's Creed was written for a nationwide contest and was, according to Page, "a summing up, in one hundred words, of the basic principles of American political faith." (He reportedly spent the prize money on Liberty Bonds) Page's family has deep roots in the United States. He is great-great-grandson of Carter Braxton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a descendant of President John Tyler. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Light nicks in left corner. Staple holes in lower left corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
