Washington, D.C., 1980 September 29. To John J. Devlin, Jr., of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "Dear Sir and Brother: I just now
received your kind note of September 22, 1980 and your request that I sign the
commemorative envelope. Attached is the envelope [not included] and with
best wishes to your (sic) and Mrs. Devlin, I am" . "Wimpy"
Winpisinger (1924-1997) was President of the International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace Workers (1977-1989). A long-time critic of the
multinational oil companies, he became founder and president of the
Citizen/Labor Energy Coalition (1979), initiating "Stop Big Oil" day. In
1980, shortly before this letter was written, Winpisinger led a walkout of 300
delegates and alternates from the Democratic National Convention to protest the
renomination of President Carter. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
