Pennsylvania and US legislator, Minister to Russia, Secretary of War
Autograph Letter signed: "Wm Wilkins" as President of the
Pittsburgh Common Council, 1p, 7½x9½. Monongahela Bridge, Pittsburth,
1818 November 8. To "Mr. Crane" [R. M. Crain], State Treasurer,
Harrisburg". Addressed on blank integral leaf in signers hand and docketed
there. In full: "I have the honor to transmit to you the enclosed
certificate stock held by the State in this [1 world illegible]. Very
respectfully, Dear Sir, your Obedient Servant." William Wilkins
(1779-1865) was U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania (1831-1834), U.S.
Minister to Russia (1834-1835) and U.S. Representative (1843-1844),
resigning to enter President Tyler's Cabinet as Secretary of War
on February 20, 1844. He served until the end of Tyler's term, March 3, 1845. In
the election of 1832, Wilkins received Pennsylvania's 30 electoral votes for
Vice President. Slightly soiled. Mailing folds. One-inch circular hole on
integral leaf where seal was opened. Otherwise, fine
condition.
