Autograph Quotation inscribed and signed "William Winter", 1
page, 6¾x9. In full: "The violets star the meadow/The rose ends fringe the

pour/[signature]/Stanza from/'After All'/For all of the pupils of
the/high school of Worcester, Mass./New York/January 08/1886". After
graduating from Harvard Law School, William Winter (1836-1917) chose a
literary career instead of a legal one. Moving to New York in 1859, he moved
into a bohemian literary circle which included Walt Whitman. Winter
wrote poetry himself, but was much more famous as a theatre critic. After
short stints with other journals, Winter became chief theatre critic for the
New York Herald from 1865 to 1909. Popular with actors, Winter
was frequently invited to meetings of the Lamb's Club, despite the usual ban on
journalists. Winter, perhaps the nation's most influential literary critic of
the era, was a strong opponent of realism in theater, and a particular
critic of Ibsen. Winter believed that art, including theatre, should elevate
and inspire audiences, not reflect life as it was. Light surface creases.
Lightly toned. Fold in center. Adhesive residue on verso. Corners slightly worn.
