WILLIAM WYMARK JACOBS
Quotation from Author William Wymark Jacobs' 1901 story A Question of Habit - "'He's dead now poor chap, and left three widders to mourn their unrepairable loss'" - mounted on an album leaf
Autograph quotation signed "W. W. Jacobs". Blue ink notation in top right corner in unknown hand. 4½x2 quotation with beveled corners mounted on a6¾x4album leaf with rounded right corners. With a small unsigned b/w printed photo affixed on verso. In full: "'He's dead now poor chap, and left three widders to mourn their unrepairable loss.'" This is a quote from A Question of Habit, which was published in the 1901 story collection Light Freights. Much of the work of British author Jacobs (1843-1943) was humorous, and his favorite subject was marine life. But he's best remembered for his tales of the macabre, like his 1902 stories The Toll House and The Monkey's Paw, considered one of the greatest horror stories ever written. Jacobs wrote a total of 10 novels between 1897 and 1916 and 11 collections of stories between 1897 and 1932. His last collection, The Night Watchman: And Other Longshoreman, were tales from one of his most enduring characters: a night-watchman on a wharf in Wapping, England, United Kingdom, who recounts the adventures of three hapless sailors. Lightly toned. Leaf is lightly foxed, creased and rippled and was neatly torn from album along left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
