GUILLERMO "WILIE" HERNANDEZ He signs an envelope with cachet celebrating the Tigers' victory in Game 3 of the 1984 World Series. Commemorative Envelope signed: "Willie Hernandez", 6½x3¾. Color cachet shows Hernandez pitching in Game 3 of the 1984 World Series, postmarked Detroit, Michigan, October 12, 1984 (the place and date of the game), 20-cent US flag stamp affixed. Hernandez (born Guillermo Hernandez Villanueva in Aguada, Puerto Rico in 1954 pitched in the Major Leagues from 1977 to 1989, mostly with the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. Hernandez is a three-time All Star from 1984 to 1986, but 1984 was inarguably his best year. He was Cy Young Award winner, as well as American League Most Valuable Player, and he tallied some of his best numbers that year, with 32 saves (third in the American League that year), 112 strikeouts and a seasonal ERA of 1.92. He also pitched closer for the Tigers in their successful World Series bid, as shown here. It is unusual for a pitcher, especially a relief pitcher, to be named MVP. He had a career ERA of 3.38 and a 70-63 record with 788 strikeouts, 147 saves, 58 putouts and 169 assists. Fine condition. Previously authenticated by JSA.
