Willie Pope (1918-2010) was a professional baseball pitcher who began his
career playing for the Negro League's Pittsburgh Crawfords (1946), but is
best known for his time playing with the Homestead Grays (1947-1948).
Pope served as a major contributor in the 1948 season for the Grays' winning
of the Negro National League Pennant and the Negro Leagues World Series against
the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League. He spent the next
few years playing in Canadian Provincial Leagues and in Western Minor Leagues,
and his younger brother David Pope would go on to be one of the first black
baseball players to be drafted into the Major Leagues in the 1950s. Fine
