WILLIE SHOEMAKER
The most successful jockey in history signs name in blue ink
Signature: "Willie Shoemaker" in blue ink. 5x3 card. By the time 4' 11" Willie Shoemaker (1931-2003) retired in 1990 he had won 8,833 races, including four Kentucky Derbies (Swaps, Tommy Lee, Lucky Debonair, Ferdinand), five Belmont Stakes (Gallant Man, Sword Dancer, Jaipur, Damascus, Avatar) and two Preakness Stakes (Candy Spots, Damascus). Winning his first race in 1949 and his last in 1990, "Shoe" was the first jockey to win over $100 million. Despite being paralyzed from the neck down since 1991, from injuries sustained, ironically, in a car accident, he continued to train horses with great success until 1997. He was present at Hollywood Park on December 10, 1999, when Laffit Pincay, Jr. broke his record for most career wins. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
