WILLIS R. WHITNEY
As head of General Electric's Research Department, he signs an autograph
letter discussing the results of an experiment (1930).
Autograph Letter signed: "Whitney", 1 page, 8x10½. Schenectady, New
York, 1930 December 29. On letterhead of the General Electric Research
Laboratory to "Dear Mr. Adler". In full: "The experiment of
[2 words illegible] liquid air in the dark. It did not show luminosity. I
am inclined to think that electric charges in a cold glass are caused by the
rapid evaporation of the ether and that it is the [1 word illegible] that
causes the light. Will try it when I can." Willis R. Whitney (1868-1958) had
been teaching chemistry at MIT when he was recruited in 1900 to head General
Electric's new Research Department. Starting in a small shack, he oversaw
the department's growth into a major research institution by the time he
retired in 1932. Whitney oversaw several improvements in the efficiency
of incandescent lighting. Horizontal and vertical mailing folds. Some ink
transference at upper center margins. Lightly creased at corners and edges.
Lightly toned at edges and folds creases.
