Photograph signed: "Wilmer Harris" in blue ink. B/w, 8x10.
Wilmer Harris (1924-2004) was a pitching ace for the
Philadelphia Stars (1945-1952). In his first at bat, he faced Satchell
Paige in front of a 40,000 person crowd at Yankee stadium; later that
season, he struck out Jackie Robinson, a then-rookie for the Monarchs. The
following year, playing against Newark and with the bases loaded, he notched
consecutive strikeouts against 3 of the greatest Negro League players: Larry
Doby, Monte Pearson and Monte Irvin. He was twice named an NBL All-Star in
1951 and 1952. Fine condition.
