WILSON BARRETT
The English stage manager and playwright signs a quote regarding the importance of art. Extremely rare!
Autograph quotation signed: "Wilson Barrett", 4¼x3¼ affixed to a 6¾x4 sheet. Quote: "Art is a goddess, artists are her priests, And he who leaves her without reverence, Is a blasphemer". Wilson Barrett (1846-1904) was an English stage actor, manager, and playwright best known for his play The Sign of the Cross (1895). Beginning as an actor, Barrett played off the success of his acting career to begin producing and managing, taking over the management of the Old Court Theatre in 1879. Two years later, he managed the Princess's Theatre, with attendance being the highest ever for the theatre during his time there. With the changing theatre scene of London, the stage manager traveled to America to tour for a short while, but found success again in London with the historical tragedy The Sign of the Cross. The play's success was never matched again, as similar plays of a religious type were not as well received, but it did allow him to leave money behind to his family after his passing in 1904. Right edge notched and frayed. Toned. Light surface creases. Small tear on bottom margin. Unknown signature on verso. Faint stains across. Otherwise, fine condition.
