WILSON GREATBATCH In 1996 he drew and signed this diagram of the pacemaker he invented in 1960 Original Art Signed: "1960 Implant aide cardiac Pacemaker/Wilson Greatbatch/07 Aug 96", 10x7 cardstock. Engineer and inventor Wilson Greatbatch (1919-2011) patented the pacemaker in 1960, a model significantly superior to the first pacemaker, designed by two Swedish engineers in 1958. Greatbatch's most significant contribution as a pacemaker pioneer was in energy sources. His 1960 model used a mercury battery, but he improved on that with a lithium battery in 1971. The later model also permitted doctors to detect when it was nearing the end of its useful life. Greatbatch held over 300 patents and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1986. Ink markings (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
