WILT CHAMBERLAIN and JOHN HAVLICEK
This limited-edition 16¾x20¾ print is of the Lakers' Wilt Chamberlain and the Celtics' John Havlicek facing off on the court - two of the best men to play the game and from both sides of one of the greatest rivalries in athletics. Signed by both Chamberlain and Havlicek.
Printed art signed: "Wilt Chamberlain" and "John Havlicek" in pencil. Also numbered "387/1000" in pencil in unknown hand, 16¾x20¾ overall, image 14¾x20 (one surface). Matted to 24¾x21 in a brown matte. These two men personify the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. Chamberlain finished his stellar career with the Lakers and made the All-Star team five times during the stay there. Havlicek, while not as well known as Larry Bird or Bill Russell, was a reliable and high-scoring sixth man and longtime member of the Celtic roster. Both men, of course, are members of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. CHAMBERLAIN (1936-1999) guided Kansas to the 1957 NCAA title game against North Carolina. Although North Carolina beat Kansas by one point in triple overtime, Chamberlain was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. After playing for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958-1959, Chamberlain joined the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors (1959-1962) and was Rookie of the Year and MVP. He moved with the franchise to San Francisco (1963-1964) before joining the Philadelphia 76ers (1964-1968). Chamberlain, who finished his pro career with the Los Angeles Lakers (1968-1973), was the first NBA player to score 4,000 points in a season. He set NBA single-game records for most points (100; March 2, 1962), most consecutive field goals (18) and most rebounds (55). A thirteen-time All-Star (1960-1969, 1971-1973), four-time MVP (1960, 1966-1968) and NBA Finals MVP (1972), Chamberlain was on two winning NBA championship teams (76ers, 1967; Lakers, 1972) and played on All NBA First Teams in 1960-1962 and 1964-1968. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. The personification of Celtics pride and greatness, HAVLICEK (1940-2019), played his entire NBA career (1962-1978) with what was then the most successful franchise in pro basketball. "Hondo" played on eight NBA championship teams (1963-1966, 1968-1969, 1974, and 1976) and made 13 consecutive All-Star teams. Havlicek scored more points for the Celtics over his career than did Bill Russell or Larry Bird, more in fact, than any player in the team's history. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984. Lightly toned. Top edge of matte is lightly chipped. Otherwise, fine condition. Not matted in Gallery of History style. Items were not evaluated outside matte. "As is" matting purchase.
