WINI SHAW
Head and shoulders image in sweater, from the collection of Warner Bros. executive "Doc" Salomon. A very rare signature!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Franklin/My very best/Sincerely/Wini Shaw". B/w, 8x10. Winifred "WINI" SHAW (1907-1982), of Hawaiian descent, performed in her parents' vaudeville show. She appeared in several Warner Bros. musicals of the 1930s, and was the first to perform "Lullaby of Broadway" (in Gold Diggers of 1935). Her version of this now-standard show tune was released on disc the same year. During World War II, Shaw toured with the USO shows of Jack Benny and Ed Wynn. She didn't return to film after the war, preferring the role of a nightclub headliner. Although not inscribed to A. M. "Doc" Salomon, this photo was part of his collection.Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack Warner who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. studios, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo collection miraculously survived. Paper tape at edges on verso. Lightly toned. Light silvering. Corners lightly worn. "W" in Wini lightly beaded but legible. Unknown stains on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
